In Salvadoran slang, "chivo" (or "chiva" for feminine nouns) is a very positive adjective that means "great," "cool," "awesome," or "fantastic." It's similar to saying something is "rad" or "sweet" in English.
For example:
It's a versatile word that can be used to describe almost anything you find enjoyable or impressive.
However, it's important to note that in other Spanish-speaking countries, like the Dominican Republic, "chivo" can have different meanings, such as being nervous or a tattletale.
The word "chivo" resonated with me (Damaris) deeply. It's woven into my personal and cultural identity, like a strand of my DNA. As a Salvadoran, it's a word that evokes fun and excitement – perfect for the feeling of cycling. I want to inspire other Latinos to see cycling as "chivo" too.
Plus, it's a term of endearment for me. My best friend's mom affectionately calls me "chivo" (short for "chivola"), which is a much nicer alternative to other Spanish nicknames for being overweight. It stuck, and when I was brainstorming business names, "Chivo Cycle" just clicked. It felt right.
